Make room for a little wonder
Small jumps.
Big connections.

Number Paths
Choose a path to explore.
Different jumps can tell the same number story.
Before moving, predict where you will land. How do you know?

Keep wondering: Could we use different jumps? What would stay the same?
A path grows into a number line.
A counting path has boxes. Each box names a whole number. Count each new box you enter, not the box you start on.
A number line shows positions and distances. Equal distances mean equal changes. A whole can be partitioned into fractions or decimals. Our addition lines label useful landmarks and keep distances proportional; an open number line on paper can be a sketch of your child’s own jumps.
The model choices connect with Models in Bridges (The Math Learning Center, 2017): number lines, place-value partitions, and equal fractional units. These are original examples. Explore The Math Learning Center’s tools ↗
